With this week’s “Do a Barrel Roll” Easter Egg I thought I’d add a few more to the list (fortunately it was already compiled by Chris Taylor):

Burn Mac .dmg Files in Windows

July 22nd, 2011 Comments off

Ever download a .dmg file of Mac software and need to burn it on your Windows PC?

The easiest way to do this is to use TransMac (a utility free for 15-day evaluation) which allows you to mount .dmg files (OS X disc image files) in Windows, see the contents and even burn them to a DVD.

  1. Download and Install TransMac
  2. Open TransMac and point it to your .dmg file
  3. Right-Click the mounted .dmg and select Burn to CD/DVD

Go the F**k to Sleep as Read by Samuel L. Jackson

July 9th, 2011 No comments

The master of the “F Bomb” himself does the voiceover of this popular “kids” book called Go the F**k to Sleep written by Adam Mansbach.

This is actually a cute and funny book which illustrates the frustrations parents have putting their children to bed.

Zynga’s Empires & Allies – Some Useful Tips

June 25th, 2011 Comments off

Everyone’s familiar with Zynga’s uberfamous Facebook game Farmville yeah?  After Farmville made the world sick of getting requests Zynga did a follow-up with Cityville which took the farm-building concept to the next level – that of creating actual cities with commerce.  That was fine and dandy but what about those of us who want to build fancy metropolisis AND demand blood and destruction?  Well, the answer to that would be their latest game – Empires & Allies which is basically Farms + Cities + Military campaigns with and against your neighbors.

Here are some of the more useful tips sites I’ve found:

VMware Android Handset Virtualization

February 15th, 2011 No comments

VMware has provided a very cool demo for virtualizing an Android phone’s OS (so you can run multiple OS’s on a single device and switch quickly between them).

The use case for this is so that your enterprise can provide a controlled and secure OS for your phone without interfering with your existing factory OS.

Nook Color: Now with Ubuntu!

February 12th, 2011 1 comment

Well, the Nook Color has been proven to be one of the coolest little tablets/e-readers so far.

It’s been rooted already (running android underneath the Nook interface) and has a nice preview of Honeycomb (Android 3.0) from the XDA Dev Forum.

For $249 from Barnes & Noble you can have an excellent quality color e-book reader that’s able to be rooted and from the microSD card to Honeycomb.

The latest development is that Ubuntu has been ported over to our favorite little e-reader.  Check it out here:

Ubuntu: Installing Evernote 4.0 using Wine

December 31st, 2010 No comments

Evernote is one of the most useful note-taking apps around but it’s only officially available for Mac (OSX) and PC (Windows).

You CAN however use Wine to allow you to run the Windows version of Evernote in Ubuntu using a few relatively simple steps (even a GUI-dependent Windows person like me can do it!) haha

Basically you run some commands to add the Wine package to Ubuntu; configure Wine to run as Windows 7; then install the Evernote windows application.

The longest part of this process was downloading/installing Wine (which I just did over WiFi @ Starbucks) :)

Wikileaks reveals EPA allowed the killing of honeybees

December 24th, 2010 No comments

If you ever wondered why all our honeybees are dying off at alarming rates…you can blame noneother than our EPA (the agency charged with protecting the environment).

They allowed the sale and widespread use of a bee-toxic pesticide called clothianidin.  Read the memo where EPA scientists warn about the lethality of the chemical and the risks it poses on not only bees but mammals and birds.

IOS 4.2 GM Build 2 for iPad

November 18th, 2010 No comments
  • Just installed this and it’s working pretty well so far.
  • Pretty similar to the iPhone with multitasking (except you get a cooler swipe when switching apps)
  • The orientation lock button has been repurposed as the Mute button
  • Build 2 fixes a previous Wi-Fi issue in the first build

Pretty simple upgrade process:

  1. Download file (this is the hardest part because of the demand right now)
  2. Sync iPad in iTunes (to back up your data)
  3. Hold Shift key, press “Check for Updates” (this will start the update process by opening a browser to point to the ipsw file (iPad1,1_4.2_8C134b_Restore)
